MALIBU, Calif. – No. 9 Pepperdine opened the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) season with a 17-10 loss to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Waves (7-7, 0-1 MPSF) could not stop the Gauchos (14-4, 1-0 MPSF) in the fourth quarter.

Pepperdine trailed by one, 6-5 at halftime and trailed 10-7 entering the fourth quarter after the Gauchos scored a goal with a second remaining in third for a three-goal cushion. It was all UCSB from there. The Gauchos closed the match on a 7-3 run for their 14th win of the season.

Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) led Pepperdine offensively with a hat trick to go along with three steals. Seven additional Waves found the back of the net once. Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) scored a goal and recorded a pair of assists, while Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) chipped in a goal with three assists and two steals.

Eric Van de Mortel tallied a match-high four goals for the Gauchos.

Pepperdine returns to the pool Sunday, October 20 when it looks to bounce back in non-conference action against the Air Force Academy. Match time against the Falcons is set for 1:00 p.m. in a match streamed live on PepperdineSports.com via WaveCasts.
