No. 8 Pepperdine Collects 19-9 Road Win at UC Davis
Oct. 19, 2012
DAVIS, CALIF. – No. 8 Pepperdine opened a four-match road trip with a convincing 19-9 victory at UC Davis Friday night at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The Waves (9-6) collected their third win in four matches and downed the Aggies (11-11) for the 10th straight time.
Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) and Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) led the way for Pepperdine offensively with four goals apiece on a night when nine different Waves scored. Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS), Parker Peterson (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS), Ray McIntyre (Calabasas, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) recorded a pair of goals against the Aggies.
“After an eight hour bus ride, we came out a little slow, but once we warmed up we were able to capitalize on the counterattack,” interim co-head coach Willo Rodriguez said. “Everyone was able to play today and almost everyone scored. We scored two penalties as well. Because we scored a lot of goals, we hope to take the same firepower into the game against Pacific. We have done a nice job defensively and we must continue to do so against a talented Pacific team.”
Pepperdine and UC Davis battled to a 2-2 tie in the first quarter, but the Waves outscored the Aggies 5-1 in the second and 7-4 in the third to take control. In the second, UC Davis scored to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, but the Waves promptly went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-3 advantage with 4:25 remaining until intermission.
Pepperdine scored five goals on power play opportunities and added two more on penalty shots. Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) made seven saves for Pepperdine.
Pepperdine returns to MPSF play when it takes on the Tigers of Pacific Sunday, October 21 in Stockton, Calif. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
