IRVINE, Calif. – No. 8 Pepperdine swept a pair of matches on day two of the 2013 SoCal Tournament, defeating No. 14 UC Davis 10-8 and then dispatched No. 11 Concordia 14-7 Sunday afternoon at Corona del Mar High School. The Waves (7-6) concluded the event at 3-1, winning three straight after dropping their opener to No. 9 UC Irvine to finish ninth in the event.

Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) continued to dazzle offensively for the Waves. The redshirt sophomore matched a career-high with six goals against UC Davis and followed it with a new career-high of seven against Concordia. Hewko scored a whopping 19 goals in just three matches during the event. Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West) also enjoyed a strong tournament, scoring a hat trick against the Aggies for seven goals in four matches.

All-American goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Erzsebet Secondary) tallied nine saves in the victory against Concordia. Matthew Carter (Princeton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) made his second start of the season against UC Davis and collected seven saves.

Pepperdine trailed 4-3 at half time and were down 7-6 after the third quarter against UC Davis. The Waves rallied in the fourth behind four goals from Hewko, including the game-winner with just :01 on the game clock.

In the finale against Concordia, the Waves trailed 4-3 after the first quarter, but dominated from there outscoring the Eagles 11-3 in the final 24 minutes. Down one goal entering the second, Pepperdine scored six unanswered goals – three of them by Hewko – and never looked back from there.

Pepperdine returns home to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play Saturday, October 19 against UC Santa Barbara. Match time against the Gauchos is set for 12:00 p.m. at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in a match featuring live streaming video on PepperdineSports.com via WaveCasts.
