Waves Split on Opening Day of 2013 SoCal Tournament at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 8 Pepperdine took a split in the opening round of the 2013 SoCal Tournament hosted by UC Irvine. The Waves dropped a tough 7-6 decision against the tournament host Anteaters in the opening match before bouncing back for a 13-4 victory against Pomona-Pitzer.
Pepperdine held narrow leads in their second 2013 meeting against the Anteaters. The Waves did not trail in the first three quarters, leading 2-1 after the first and 4-3 heading into the fourth quarter. It was all Anteaters in the final period as they outscored Pepperdine 4-2 to seize a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.
Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West) and Jacob Schrimpf (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) each scored a pair of goals to pace the Waves. All-American goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Erzsebet Secondary) tallied 12 saves in the contest.
Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) powered the Waves against Pomona-Pitzer, scoring a career-high six goals. Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) and Madaras each registered a pair of scoring strikes. Matthew Carter (Princeton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) made his first start of the season and collected nine saves.
It was never a contest as Pepperdine shutout the Sagehens in the opening half, cruising to a 5-0 lead at the intermission. The Waves outscored Pomona-Pitzer 8-4 in the second powered by five goals by Hewko.
Pepperdine opens day two of the 2013 SoCal Tournament against UC Davis. Match time against the Aggies is set for 8:00 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School.
