Men's Water Polo: No. 8 Pepperdine Downs Concordia 12-6
Oct. 6, 2012
CONCORDIA VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Pepperdine got production throughout its lineup as nine players scored, led by a pair of goals from James Perry (Ordinda, Calif./Miramonte HS), Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley CC) and Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS). Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) recorded 12 saves for the Waves. "It was really a team effort today," Pepperdine interim co-head coach Willo Rodriguez said. "Everyone was able to contribute today and Bence Valics actually led us today with 14 blocks in the cage with a penalty. That definitely was a turning point for us. The great thing about today's game was we had almost 10 guys score and that's always good to see especially when we have a lot of freshman without a lot of experience." Loomis powered Pepperdine early with two goals in the first period. The Waves went on the board first, but Concordia equalized. From there Pepperdine scored four unanswered goals and took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
DeTrane helped Pepperdine finish strong with a pair of goals in the final period, while Valics collected four saves. Pepperdine opens MPSF play with a big weekend, beginning Saturday, October 13 against UC Irvine. Match time against the Anteaters is set for 11:00 a.m. The Waves then take on Stanford at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
