No. 7 Pepperdine Drops Pair on Final Day of SoCal Tournament

Santa Barbara, Calif. – No. 7 Pepperdine dropped a pair of matches to top-five teams to finish eighth in the 2012 SoCal Tournament, hosted by UC Santa Barbara. The Waves battled, but could not overcome a pair of opponents who were upset in earlier rounds. Pepperdine (6-5) opened with a 13-8 loss to No. 3 Stanford in the morning session. Ray McIntyre (Calabasas, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) scored twice for the Waves against the Cardinal. In the match for seventh place, the Waves dropped a 12-9 decision to Cal and took eighth place in the 16-team event. Pepperdine’s Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley CC) scored a career-high five goals and the Waves got a pair of scores from Nick Cooper (Clayton, Calif./De La Salle HS) and Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS). DeTrane finished the tournament with a team-high 11 goals, while goalie Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) recorded 38 saves in four contests. No. 3 Stanford def. No. 7 Pepperdine 13-8
