No. 7 Pepperdine Earns Split on Opening Day of SoCal Tournament

Santa Barbara, Calif. – No. 7 Pepperdine opened play in the 2012 SoCal Tournament with a 12-7 victory against No. 10 Loyola Marymount, before falling to No. 2 UCLA in the afternoon session by a final score of 14-7. Pepperdine will take on No. 3 Stanford Sunday at 9:20 a.m. at Dos Pueblos High School. With a win against the Cardinal, the Waves would play in the fifth place game at 2:40 p.m., while a loss would secure a berth in the seventh place game at 1:20 p.m. With its opening round victory against the Lions, the Waves have assured an upper echelon finish in the 16-team event. Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif.) and Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif.) paced the Waves offensively with five goals on day one, while DeTrane was the only Wave to tally multiple goals in both matches on Saturday. Goalie Marko Valics (Eger, Hungary) collected 19 saves. No. 7 Pepperdine def. No. 10 Loyola Marymount 12-7 Matthew DeTrane added a pair of goals, while James Perry (Orinda, Calif.) and Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary) each tallied goals for Pepperdine in its second straight win. Bence Valics recorded 13 saves for the Waves.
