Waves Drop 8-7 Battle at No. 1 UCLA Friday
Sept. 27, 2013
WESTWOOD, Calif. – Pepperdine roared back from a daunting first-half deficit, but could not come all the way back against No. 1 UCLA, dropping an 8-7 non-conference contest Friday night at the Spieker Aquatics Center. The Waves (3-5) pushed the top-ranked Bruins (12-0) to the brink of their first loss of the season, scoring three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter.
Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) enjoyed a huge match for Pepperdine in a match televised on the Pac-12 Network. The redshirt sophomore matched his career-high with five goals to lead all players in the pool. Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) added a pair of goals while Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) dished a pair of assists to go with a steal for the Waves.
UCLA dominated early, blanking the Waves in the opening period and seized a 5-2 lead at the intermission. Pepperdine won the second half and outscored the Bruins 3-1 in the fourth quarter, but could not find the equalizer on its final possession.
All-American goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger Hungary/Erzsebet Secondary) collected eight saves for the Waves. Valics also collected a pair of steals and allowed just three UCLA goals in the second half and just one in the fourth quarter.
Pepperdine returns to action when it opens the home portion of its schedule with a four-team invitational (Concordia, Golden West College, Long Beach City College and the Waves) Saturday, October 5 at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Waves take on Long Beach CC at 10:00 a.m.
