Water Polo Splits Doubleheader With No. 1 USC And Fresno Pacific
Sept. 25, 2010
MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team followed up a 13-4 loss to No. 1 USC with its biggest win of the season - a 21-4 thrashing of Fresno Pacific - Saturday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
Today's split decision leaves Pepperdine with a 6-5 overall record (0-1 MPSF) heading into next weekend's two-day SoCal Tournament. USC remains unbeaten at 11-0, while the Sunbirds fell to 2-11.
The Waves 17-goal victory over Fresno Pacific represented their largest margin of victory for 2010; they beat Occidental by 16 (20-4) two weeks ago at the Inland Empire Tournament.
Pepperdine jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter of the night cap as five different players scored on 10 possessions, including two with a man advantage. The Waves also scored five straight goals from the end of the first quarter into the second; their eighth goal - notched by redshirt junior Travis Gough (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) - actually crossed the line in between hitting both the near and far posts.
It was just that kind of game for the Waves as they scored at will over four quarters. Sophomore James Perry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) led all Waves with four goals, tying a season high (9/5 vs. Claremont), while five more of his teammates posted multi-goal efforts.
Additionally, Pepperdine finished the game a perfect 4-of-4 on extra-man opportunities.
In addition to blanking the Sunbirds throughout the first quarter on four shot attempts, the defense also came away with 16 steals while goalkeepers Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) and Matthew Carter (Princeton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) combined for five saves.
Valics, a freshman, not only chipped in two thefts in the hole, but he also assisted on two goals and let a shot rip across the length of the pool to end the third quarter as the sun shone brightly in the eyes of FPU goalkeeper Jake Finney. Finney, however, got his hands up in time to make one of his three second-half saves.
Sophomore Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) led all field players in game two with four steals and scored three times throughout today's doubleheader. Also recording goals in the loss to the Trojans were sophomores Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS), Milos Purkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/10th Gymnasium) and Colin Carroll (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS).
Senior Bryce McLain (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Beach HS) and Valics split time in goal vs. USC and combined for six stops.
Pepperdine's next game is against Long Beach State Saturday at 9:20 a.m. in the first round of the 2010 SoCal Tournament hosted by UCLA. The Waves are in the A Bracket with the 49ers, USC and Redlands.
