Waves Earn Split on Day One of 2013 NorCal Tournament

PLEASANT HILL, Calif. – Pepperdine kicked off the 2013 NorCal Tournament with a split on day one at Diablo Valley College. The Waves (3-2) opened the day with a 8-6 upset victory against No. 7 UC Irvine, before falling to No. 1 USC in the afternoon session.
Pepperdine will take on the winner of tonight’s Pacific vs. Stanford match Sunday at 8:00 a.m. at Spieker Pool on the California campus in Berkeley. The Waves will close out competition of the event later in the afternoon at Spieker Pool.
Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) paced Pepperdine offensively scoring a team-high four goals on day one, including a hat trick against the Anteaters. Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) and Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) each added a pair of scoring strikes. Goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Erzsebet Secondary) corralled 24 saves, including a season-high 14 against UC Irvine.
PEPPERDINE def. UC IRVINE 8-6: Pepperdine trailed UC Irvine 3-1 after the opening period, but outscored the Anteaters 7-3 the rest of the way to seize victory in the opening round of the NorCal Tournament at Diablo Valley College. Luke Hewko had a hat trick for the Waves, while Marko Madaras and Danny White both had a pair of goals. Pepperdine’s defense did a strong job, allowing UC Irvine just one goal per period after absorbing three tallies in the first. Bence Valics collected the win, recording a season-high 14 saves.

No. 1 USC def. PEPPERDINE 9-4: Pepperdine did a solid job containing a potent USC offense, but could not penetrate the top-ranked Trojans defense and dropped a 9-4 decision Saturday afternoon. Luke Hewko, Jack Harryman (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS), Jacob Schrimpf (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) and Chad Farnan (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) each found the back of the net for Pepperdine. Bence Valics registered 10 saves for the Waves, while Matthew Carter (Prnceton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) made seven in the fourth quarter.
