No. 7 Pepperdine Dispatches Long Beach City College 20-5 in Saturday Exhibition
Sept. 22, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. – No. 7 Pepperdine scored early and often in a 20-5 exhibition victory against Long Beach City College Saturday morning at Raleigh Runnels Pool. Eleven Waves scored in the contest.
Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary) and Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif.) each registered four goals for Pepperdine, while Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif.) added three. Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif.) chipped in with a pair of scores.
Pepperdine held a 6-0 shutout until the Vikings scored at the 3:00 mark in the second period.
“I think the guys responded really well with how hard we worked this week,” interim co-head coach Merril Moses said. “We didn’t let up in any practice. It’s a good chance for us to see some things progress since I’ve stepped in and I think we’re on the right track and now our next focus is the SoCal Tournament in Santa Barbara. Our first game is against LMU. We’ll scout them and go from there.”
Pepperdine used most of its roster in the exhibition and Moses was pleased with the way the team seized the opportunity against LBCC.
“We’re one team and one family. Every person is a part of this team and you’re only as strong as your weakest link. I think they’ve taken that on and everyone is pushing really hard. I saw some great things from young players today,” Moses said.”
Bence Valcis (Eger, Hungary) had an active day as the final line of defense for the Waves and collected 13 saves.
Pepperdine returns to action when it competes in the 2012 SoCal Tournament beginning Saturday September 29 in Santa Barbara. The Waves will take on longtime rival Loyola Marymount in the opener at 9:20 a.m.
