Sept. 10, 2011
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 7 Pepperdine defeated No. 10 Loyola Marymount, 11-7 on the road in a hard-fought rivalry game. The Waves garnered the first Wells Fargo PCH Cup points of the season. The team saw well-balanced scoring in the game with eight different players netting goals. Juniors Stephen Loomis, Spencer Hamby and James Perry led the way with two goals apiece.
The Waves got things started quickly, with junior Colin Carroll (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) putting the team up 1-0 at the 6:44 mark in the first period. RS SO Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) put the Waves up 2-0 at with 2:38 left in the first period. The defense held strong to start the game, with sophomore goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) not having to make a save in the period.
In the second period, the Lions got on the board with a goal a little more than two minutes into the second period and tied it, 2-2, at the 3:10 mark. That is the closest the Lions would get, however, as the Waves put away three more goals by Matt De Trane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley College), Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) and Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) to extend the lead to 5-2 going into the break.
LMU started the third quarter out fast with a goal less than 30 seconds into the period to put the score at 5-3. The Waves and Lions then traded goals back and forth for the next three minutes. Nathan Castillo (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/Golden West College) made the score 6-3, the Lions netted one at the 4:39 mark and Loomis answered with his second goal of the game to put the Wave up, 7-4. Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) added his first goal of the game with 2:06 left in the third to build the Waves' lead up to 4.
In the final quarter, the Lions cut the Waves' lead to three, but the team answered with a goal from Perry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS). Hamby added his second of the day to make the score 10-6 and the Lions answered with 1:08 left in the game, 10-7. Perry added his second of the game with 24 seconds left to put the final score at 11-7.
Valics finished the game with seven saves in the cage.
The game had all the makings of a rivalry match, which showed throughout, with the Waves earning seven of their 11 goals off 6-on-5 situations. Likewise the Waves defense looked excellent on the five-man, with the Lions having 16 opportunities and only scoring on four.
This is the second-straight win for the Waves over the Lions.
On the victory, head coach Jack Kocur said, "It is a great day for the Waves. We get the first points for Pepperdine in the PCH Cup. It was a hard-fought game today. I felt like neither team had any breakthroughs today. LMU was very well-prepared. This is a good stepping stone for us heading into NorCals next weekend."
Next up for the Waves is a trip to Stockton, Calif. for the NorCal Tournament, Sept. 17-18, where they will get their first taste of MPSF competition.
