TOKYO, Japan  Marv Dunphy and Paul Carroll of the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team spent the past few weeks in Tokyo at the 2007 World Cup, which ran from Nov. 18 to Dec. 2.
Dunphy, a former U.S. head coach, was the team leader for the American squad and played an administrative role. Former Pepperdine player Sean Rooney was also on the roster. The U.S. finished in fourth place and went 8-3 overall.
Carroll, a junior outside hitter for the Waves, hails from Australia and helped his country to an eighth-place finish. He had 183 kills, second-most in the tournament. His 200 points (183 kills, 10 blocks, seven aces) also ranked second in the tournament. Australia went 4-7 as a team.
The top three teams (Brazil, Russia and Bulgaria) at the tournament earned berths in the 2008 Olympics.
Dunphy was the head coach when the U.S. won its only World Cup championship in 1985.
The two will return to Pepperdine and get ready for the spring season. Pepperdine next plays in the Cay Club Tournament in Clearwater, Fla., from Dec. 28-31.
