Men's Volleyball Announces 2012 Schedule

MALIBU, Calif. – The 2012 Pepperdine men’s volleyball schedule has been released and features six home nonconference contests in addition to the always challenging Mountain Pacific Sports Federation lineup.

Marv Dunphy, now in his 29th season as head coach, returns 13 student-athletes from his 2011 squad, including starting opposite side hitter Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), who led the team last season with 4.04 kills/set.

Also returning are outside hitters Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and Beau Vandeweghe (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), middle blocker Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS) and libero Mike McMahon (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS).

In addition to the veteran staff, six promising freshman join the team this season including Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS), Evan Dean (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar HS),  Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS), Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) and  Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS).

All six rookies earned a spot on Volleyball Magazine’s Fab 50 list, and boast a plethora of experience playing at the high school, club, youth and junior national team levels.

The year opens with a six-match home stand beginning with a pair of contests versus Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) team Lewis on Jan. 7 & 8.

Pepperdine gets MPSF action underway inside Firestone Fieldhouse with matches versus Cal State Northridge (Jan. 11), Long Beach State (Jan. 14) and Hawaii (Jan. 20 & 21).

The Waves conclude the month of January on the road, when they take on UC Irvine (Jan. 25) and UC San Diego (Jan. 27)

February brings UCLA (Feb. 1), UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 3) and Cal Baptist (Feb. 15) to Malibu, while the Waves pay visits to USC (Feb. 10), Stanford (Feb. 25) and Pacific (Feb. 25).

Ten matches keeps Pepperdine busy in March. Home matches include Penn State (March 8), USC (March 12), Harvard (March 12), George Mason (March 24), Stanford (March 29) and Pacific (March 31).

The final home matches of the regular season are schedule for April 5 and April 7 versus UCI and UCSD, respectively. The Waves bring the 2012 campaign full circle on April 12 and 14 when they make the return trips to CSUN and Long Beach State.

Postseason runs April 21, 26 and 28 with the MPSF Tournament and concludes May 3 and 5 when the top four programs in the country battle it out at the NCAA Championship.

All 17 home contests will be broadcast live and for free via WaveCasts, which is available at www.PepperdineSports.com.

The Waves were 11-15 overall in 2011 and 7-17 in the MPSF to finish in ninth place.
