MALIBU, Calif. – On Thursday evening, the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team embarked on what promises to be a memorable trip to South Korea.  The Waves will open the journey with the Hyundai Life Cup, an international competition that features teams from six different countries. The trip continues with scrimmages against local universities and professional teams, and of course some site seeing.

The Hyundai Life Cup, hosted by the Korean Volleyball Federation, runs from August 11-15. Pepperdine, the United States’ representative, will play squads from Kazakhstan, China, Japan, South Korea and Australia in a round-robin style format.

Following the Hyundai Life Cup, the Waves will scrimmage against the Cheonan Hyundai Capital Sky Walkers on Saturday, August 16. Notably, alum and soon-to-be Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Famer Sean Rooney played for the Sky Walkers from 2005-07. Rooney helped the professional team bring home championships in 2006 and 2007 and was named Most Valuable Player.

From there, Pepperdine will scrimmage Han Yang University on August 18 and Sung Kyun Kwan University on August 19.  Marv Dunphy, the Waves’ long time coach, is no stranger to Han Yan University. The campus arena hosted pool play matches during the 1988 Olympic Games, where Coach Dunphy led Team USA to gold.

Site seeing in Seoul and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) are also on tap before the Waves return state side.

Stay tuned to PepperdineSports.com, as well as Facebook and Twitter, for updates from team members on the trip.
