Torres Tabbed 2012 Volleyball Magazine All-American
July 24, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - Junior Maurice Torres of the Pepperdine men's volleyball team has been selected to the 2012 Volleyball Magazine All-America second team, the publication announced last week. The honor comes after Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran) was awarded AVCA All-American second team and All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first team accolades back in April. Torres led the team in 2012, and ranked fifth amongst all Mountain Pacific Sports Federation players with 3.98 kills/set. The junior made his mark on the Pepperdine record book by becoming the 17th member of the 1,000 kills club, having reached the milestone at BYU on March 2. He currently ranks 10th all-time in program history with 1,217 career kills. His 2012 season tally of 450 kills ranks ninth in the Waves' single season (rally scoring only) annuls. This past season, Torres tallied 47 service aces which counts for the fourth most in any single season at Pepperdine. His first ace of 2013 will be his 100th career ace. The MPSF led all conferences with 21 total selections on the first, second and third teams. Penn State of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association placed three student-athletes on the list, while Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Associations programs Loyola Chicago, Lewis and Ohio State combined for seven All-Americans. Torres is the first Pepperdine player to pick up Volleyball Magazine All-American honors since Kasey Crider earned a spot on the first team roster in 2010. USC’s Tony Ciarelli and Micah Christenson were named Player and Freshman of the Year, respectively. The Waves finished the 2012 season with a 14-15 overall record, and placed seventh in the conference with a 9-13 record.
