MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine men’s volleyball alums Brad Keenan and John Mayer opened the 2014 AVP Tour with a first-place finish at the St. Petersburg Open over the weekend. As the No. 6 seed, Keenan and Mayer upset top-seeded Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb in the finals in a thrilling three-set battle, 16-21, 21-19, 18-16.

Keenan, who wore the orange and navy from 2000-03, and Mayer, a Pepperdine player from 2003-05, were coached by yet another Wave in Beau Daniels. The trio combined for six All-American awards during their time in Malibu. Keenan had perhaps the most prolific indoor career for the Waves, and was named the AVCA National Player of the Year in 2002.

In addition to Keenan, Mayer and Daniels, there were two more familiar faces in St. Petersburg over the weekend. Summer Ross, who helped lift the Pepperdine sand volleyball team to the inaugural national title in 2012, finished third in the women’s bracket alongside Emily Day. Marcio Sicoli, an assistant coach for the Waves’ sand squad, doubles as coach for Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross, who were crowned champions of the event. It was Walsh’s 67th AVP win, making her the winningest woman in AVP history.

Keenan is married to April Ross, a silver medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This was the third time in AVP history that a married couple has won at the same event.

This was Mayer and Keenan’s first AVP title together, and Mayer’s second overall. He won the AVP San Diego Open with Jeff Nygaard in 2009. Although Keenan has over two dozen top-three finishes to his name, this was the first AVP title for the 2006 AVP Rookie of the Year.

Keenan paced the field in two statistical categories, dishing 14 aces and tallying 31 blocks. Mayer collected 68 digs during to the tournament to rank in at No. 1.

Next up on the AVP Tour is the Milwaukee Open on July 3-6.
