Sean Rooney Named AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Year

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Anerican Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is pleased to announce Pepperdine University senior outside hitter Sean Rooney has been selected as teh 2005 AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Year for men's volleyball.

Rooney ranks second nationally among NCAA Division I-II players in points per game with 6.35 while hitting .395 on the season. He has extended his consecutive double-digit kill match streak to 50 matches, while averaging 1.46 digs and 0.49 aces per game. Rooney has totaled 20 or more kills in 14 matches, including two 30-plus kill contests in 2005. He hit .407 against nationally ranked teams over the course of 78 games during the regular season. Rooney tallied season-highs of 44.5 points, 36 kills and seven aces versus Pacific in the season-opening match on Jan. 14. He contributed a double-double of 22 kills and 10 blocks versus Long Beach State on Jan. 27. Rooney currently ranks seventh among Division I-II student-athletes in aces per game.

Rooney is a four-time AVCA All-American and only the seventh male student-athlete to achieve such an honor. He has earned AVCA Division I-II All-America First Team selection each of the past three seasons and is only the eighth player to be named to the first team three times. Rooney has current career statistics of 1,962 kills, 618 digs, 127 aces, 332 blocks and a .384 attack percentage in his four seasons with the Waves.

Pepperdine won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular season with a 20-2 league record and claimed the MPSF Tournament championship. The Waves are 23-2 overall and seeded first in this week's NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship. Pepperdine has been ranked number one in the USA Today/CSTV Top 15 Division I-II Men's Coaches Poll six times this season. The Waves have won six straight matches heading into the national semifinals, in addition to a 15-match win streak posted between Jan. 21 and March 25 this year. Pepperdine is 18-2 against teams currently ranked in the national poll.
