West, Torres Honored as AVCA All-Americans
April 25, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Matt West and Maurice Torres of the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team were voted AVCA All-Americans, the organization announced today. West made the 10-person first-team roster, while Torres earned a spot on the second team for the second-consecutive season.
West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS), who was also an All-MPSF first team selection, is the only setter to be recognized on the first team.
The Waves’ quarterback averaged an NCAA-best 11.25 assists/set and helped the team to a team hitting percentage of .295 – sixth best in the country.
The sophomore contributed extensively on the defensive end as well, posting 1.40 digs/set and 0.68 blocks/set. He ranked second behind Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) with an aces average of 0.24.
In the program annuls, West currently ranks seventh with 2,457 career assists. At the pace he is going, 11.32 assists/set, the setter should move into the top-three by the end of his four years in Malibu.
Making his second-straight appearance on the second team was Torres. The senior is widely considered to be one of the top all-around players in the nation, and leads the NCAA in points/set (5.02), ranks second in kills/set (4.21) and is 14th in aces/set (0.36). In 2013, Torres picked up a team-best 1.56 digs/set and is third in total blocks – behind the Waves’ middle blockers – with 82.
In four years, Torres has inked his name in several categories in the programs’ record book. With 1,634 kills, the senior ranks sixth all-time at Pepperdine. He also ranks in the top-10 in digs (618, 10th), aces (135, fifth), points (1942.5, sixth) and sets played (406, fourth).
Like West, Torres was also an All-MPSF first team honoree.
Pepperdine reached the MPSF Tournament for the 19th time in 21 years, and concluded the season ranked fifth in the league and in the AVCA rankings.
