Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - The Pepperdine Waves clinched at least a share of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular season title Friday night with a 3-1 (32-34, 30-27, 30-26, 30-25) victory over the Stanford Cardinal at Maples Pavilion.

The victory improves Pepperdine's record to 22-1 overall and 18-1 in conference play. Stanford falls to 3-22 on the season, 2-17 in MPSF action.

Pepperdine was led by Paul Carroll's 30 kills on .400 hitting and Greg Gaudino's career-high 16 kills on .609 hitting. Tom Hulse added 11 kills and a team-high nine blocks. Jonathan Winder recorded his third double-double of the season with a 57-assist, 14 dig effort, while setting the Waves to a .301 hitting clip.

Stanford received a team-high 22 kills from Evan Romero, 20 from Matt Ceran and 19 from Kawika Shoji and outblocked Pepperdine by a 16.0-14.5 margin, led by Garrett Werner's 11.

Pepperdine rallied from a 19-15 deficit in game one to take a 26-25 lead heading into a Cardinal timeout. Despite a pair of Stanford service errors late, the Waves were unable to close out the set as Pepperdine dropped game one for the fourth straight match.

The Waves rebounded in game two by hitting at a .515 clip and held off a late Stanford rally to even the match.

Pepperdine got out to leads of 6-3 and 13-8 in game three only to see the Cardinal pull within one at 26-25 following a Waves' hitting error and a Stanford block. But Pepperdine closed out the frame with a 3-1 run to take a 2-1 advantage.

Trailing 16-13 in game four, Stanford used consecutive blocks to force the Waves into a timeout with a 16-15 lead. That would be as close as the Cardinal would get to forcing a fifth game after a 4-0 Pepperdine run pushed the lead to 27-23 leading to the final of Winder's four kills for the match.

Pepperdine will close out the road portion of its schedule tomorrow night when it faces the Pacific Tigers at the Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif. The Waves have won 19 straight matches heading into tomorrow's tilt and are a perfect 10-0 on the road this season. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. PDT.
