Matt West Named MPSF Player of the Week
March 24, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – Junior setter Matt West of the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team was voted MPSF Player of the Week for his part in leading the Waves to 3-0 victories over both Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge last week inside Firestone Fieldhouse. This is the second time West has picked up conference weekly honors in his career, and first of the season.
West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) led Pepperdine to back-to-back shutouts last week, moving the Waves into second place in the MPSF standings. Pepperdine has now won five in a row – the largest streak since early in the 2012 season – as the team enters its final road trip of the regular season.
The 2013 AVCA and Volleyball Magazine All-American set the lights out of Firestone Fieldhouse during the Waves’ 25-21, 25-21, 27-25 upset over the then-#2 ranked 49ers, dishing an even 14.00 assists per set to snap the visiting team’s eight-match win streak. Pepperdine out-killed Long Beach State 47-38 in the match.
West also picked up 11 digs, marking his sixth assist-digs double-double of the season.
He followed that up with just 23 assists in the sweep versus the Matadors on Saturday, but made up for the difference by putting down four kills on five attempts, three aces and two blocks for a career-high 8.0 points.
His previous career high was set at 6.0 points.
West typically does not attack the ball much, averaging just 0.63 attempts and 0.31 kills per set, but tied a career-high with his four kills last Saturday.
The junior’s award comes just one week after Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany) picked up his first MPSF Player of the Week award.
Pepperdine is the third program to place more than one student-athlete on the MPSF Player of the Week list this season, joining Long Beach State and Stanford.
The Waves play two on the road this week, beginning with the Cardinal on Friday and ending at Pacific on Saturday.
