No. 3 Waves Upend No. 2 Hawaii, 3-2

MALIBU, Calif. - Having been jumped by No. 2-ranked Hawaii in this week's USA Today/CSTV Top 15 poll, the No. 2-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team maintained sole possession of first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) standings with a thrilling 3-2 (30-26, 23-30, 30-24, 27-30, 20-18) victory over the Warriors at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu Thursday night.
Pepperdine (11-1, 11-1 MPSF) fought off three Hawaii (11-3, 9-2 MPSF) match-point attempts and used a Matt Bender attack error and Sean Rooney's match-leading 28th kill of the night to secure the Wave's victory.
The Waves hit .455 in the opening frame as it took a 1-0 lead in the match only to see Hawaii answer in game two with 21 kills on 41 swings.
Rooney recorded his kills while hitting at a .317 clip and turned in nine stuffs from the outside, while Tom Hulse notched five kills on eight swings with 13 total blocks in the match. Andy Hein logged 12 block assists and Jonathan Winder tallied eight block assists as Pepperdine held a decisive 27.5-11.0 edge in blocks.
Pedro Azenha and Bender each logged 25 kills in the match as the Warriors pounded out 83 kills to Pepperdine's 71.
The Waves held Hawaii to .000 hitting in game three as Pepperdine took a 2-1 lead. The match would go the distance as the Warriors responded in game four.
With the win, Pepperdine moved to 4-0 in five-game matches this season. These same two teams will return to the court Friday evening in Honolulu at 9:00 p.m. (PT).
