BRIEFLY The fifth-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team (9-3, 5-3) looks to extend its winning streak to three matches when the No. 15 Pacific Tigers (4-11) ride into Malibu Thursday. The Waves have won all nine of their matches in three games this season. Last week, Pepperdine swept UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. Sean Rooney and Fred Winters combined for 70 of the team's 109 total kills in six games. James Ka averaged a team-high 3.83 D/G while John Mayer set up 15.67 A/G, respectively.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE WAVES
The Waves remained at the No. 5 spot in this week's USA Today / AVCA and Volleyball Magazine national polls. The MPSF conference owns all Top 5 spots in both rankings. As a team, Pepperdine averaged a .367 hitting percentage while holding the opponents to .250 percent. The Waves outblocked (3.25-1.66 B/G), outhit (16.35-15.10 K/G) , and outserved (1.20-1.08 S/G) all opponents. Winters averaged a team-high 5.19 K/G while Rooney closely followed with 4.35 K/G through nine matches. Andy Hein paced the Waves after recording 1.45 B/G; Setter John Mayer stacks up in assists, aces (0.28 SA/G) and blocks (1.00 B/G). Last Saturday's match was Marv Dunphy's 380th career win at Pepperdine.
A LOOK BACK: Senior outside hitter Fred Winters totaled a match-high 22 kills and posted a .441 hitting percentage to lead No. 4 Pepperdine to a three-game sweep of host No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match Saturday night at The Thunderdome in Santa Barbara. The Waves won by scores of 30-27, 30-26, 30-24. The win improved Pepperdine to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in MPSF play, while the Gauchos dropped to 8-6 on the season and 4-5 in conference action. Joining Winters in double-digit kill totals for the Waves was junior outside hitter Sean Rooney who totaled 15 kills. Junior libero James Ka had a team-high 11 digs, while junior setter John Mayer tallied 46 set assists.
POLL-VAULTING: After holding steady at the No. 1 spot for three weeks, the Waves dropped to No. 2, No. 4 and came in at No. 5 last week. Pepperdine remained the fifth-ranked team in a poll released Tuesday.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Pacific-- The Pacific men's volleyball team fell in four games to the No.1 Hawai'i Warriors on Tuesday, February 16. With the loss the Tigers fall to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in the MPSF, while the Warriors improve to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Game scores for the match were 30-20 ,24-30, 30-27, 30-19 in favor of the Warriors. Brian Zorrow lead his team with 3.11 kills per game.
ON DECK: After the Thursday match, the Waves take an eight day break before jumpstarting a five match road trip that extends to the third Saturday in March. Pepperdine will travel to LBSU, UC San Diego, BYU and USC.
COACHES CORNER: Widely recognized as one of the game's premier coaches, Dr. Marv Dunphy has directed Pepperdine to three NCAA men's volleyball titles during his 20 seasons as the Waves' head coach. Dunphy returned to Pepperdine in October of 2000 following a 17-month sabbatical after serving as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Pepperdine enjoyed one of its best-ever seasons in 2002, compiling an overall record of 29-5 and advancing to the NCAA title match before losing a four-game decision to Hawaii. Last year in 2003, the Waves completed the season 24-6 and clinched the MPSF regular season title for the second consecutive season.
