Final Stats

MALIBU, Calif. - The Long Beach State 49ers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to hand the Pepperdine Waves their first setback of the season 3-2 (33-35, 30-26, 23-30, 30-24, 15-11) in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action (MPSF) Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Paul Carroll led Pepperdine (3-1, 2-1 MPSF) with 34.5 points on a team-high 29 kills, four aces and three blocks. John Parfitt turned in a 21.5-point effort with 19 kills and five blocks, Greg Gaudino added 15.5 points and Jon Grobe finished the night with 12 points.

Long Beach State (4-2, 2-1 MPSF) was led by Norm Hutton's 30 points on 29 kills and Paul Lotman's 27 points with 25 kills.

Pepperdine looked like it would make quick work of Long Beach in game one by jumping out to 14-8 lead. But the 49ers fought their way back into the match and eventually used a 5-0 run to take a 25-23 lead. Trailing 29-27, consecutive kills by Carroll and an attack error by Long Beach put Pepperdine back up 30-29. The two teams battled back and forth until Hutton and Lotman had consecutive miscues to give the Waves the two point margin of victory.

A 7-1 Long Beach run helped give the 49ers a 13-8 lead in game two. Pepperdine chipped away at the lead and following four straight 49er miscues the Waves were within one at 18-17. Moments later Carroll would tie the game at 21-all but Pepperdine was never able to get past Long Beach which tied the contest at 1-1.

After trailing much of the way in game three, Pepperdine finally seized control of the set. A Lotman service error started the ball rolling for the Waves who trailed 13-12. Carroll stepped to the service line and delivered a pair of aces that gave Pepperdine its first lead of the set. Parfitt followed with a kill and Tom Hulse and Brett Hughes teamed up for a block that gave the Waves a 16-13 advantage. From there it was all Pepperdine which scored nine of the next 12 points setting them up for a 2-1 lead in the match.

Dean Bittner started a 3-0 Long Beach run that snapped a 14-14 stalemate in game four. The 49ers slowly built up their lead over the final half of stanza en route to the six-point victory that sent the match to a fifth game.

Long Beach led wire-to-wire in the final game. After taking a 3-1 lead in the set, the two teams traded sideouts to 9-8. Lotman recorded the next two kills and Parfitt was blocked at the net giving the visitors the advantage it would need for the victory.

Pepperdine will face UCLA Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT at Pauley Pavilion.
