Thunderbirds Top Waves in Exhibition Action
Dec. 29, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team, in its first exhibition match in over a month, fell to the University of British Columbia today inside Firestone Fieldhouse, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16). Despite a match-high 16 kills by junior Josh Taylor, the Thunderbirds collectively hit over .400 to keep the Waves at bay.
Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) led all hitters with 16 kills while hitting at a blistering .556 (16 kills-1 error-27 attempts) attack percentage. The junior outside hitter rounded out the day with six digs and an ace.
The Thunderbirds limited the errors on the attack and hit .418 (46-8-91) as a team to control the tempo. Three players reached double digits in kills, led by Ben Chow and Quintin Schmidt with 12 apiece and Mac McNicol with 10.
Pepperdine hit for a .211 (38-18-95) clip, hindered by UBC’s strong day on the block. Although the Waves tallied 4.5 blocks in the opening frame, they were unable to put another rejection in the books the remainder of the contest. British Columbia posted 13.0 total blocks, led by Alex Russell’s match-best eight.
Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar HS/Ohio State) and Ryan Plueger (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) shared libero duties and combined for eight digs. Anderson, in his first season with the Waves, picked up five digs in set two alone.
Freshman setter Soren Dion-Kindem (Agoura, Calif./Agoura HS) managed the offense with 35 total assists while adding five digs.
Pepperdine looks to even the series versus British Columbia on Tuesday, Dec. 31. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
