Balanced Effort Lifts Waves Over Harvard in Straight Sets

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team dominated every facet of its match against Harvard as the Waves swept the Crimson in three sets 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 in a non-conference contest Tuesday night in Malibu. The Waves upped its season-best attack percentage to .460 (48-8-87) in the straight-set rout.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two prestigious academic institutions.
Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) led Pepperdine with 13 kills and Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) distributed 31 assists as the Waves snapped a four-match losing streak and improved to 7-11 on the season.
The first set was competitive in the early going with the Waves holding a slight advantage at 10-7. Then Pepperdine picked up the intensity and with it their game. The Waves went on an 11-3 run to break open the first set at 21-10 and went on to win, 25-14.
Riecks had three kills during the run as Pepperdine hit a strong .524 while Harvard struggled at .167. Crider had 11 assists. The Waves were proficient as they had only two attack errors in the opening set.
The trend continued in the second frame as the Waves and Harvard traded points before the home team took the advantage. Tyler Jaynes’ (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) kill off an assist from Crider gave Pepperdine an 11-7 lead. Similar to the first set, the Waves went on a 10-3 run to increase its to 21-10. Pepperdine had 21 digs in the set, led by Mike McMahon (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS), Sean Pederson (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mount Carmel HS) and Crider with six apiece. A block by Pedersen and Joel Lopata (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield HS) clinched set point as the Waves won 25-13.
Pepperdine clinched the match with its 25-15 win in the third set. Back-to-back kills by freshman Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) gave Pepperdine a lead of 16-9 and shortly thereafter he did it again to make it 23-14. He finished the match with a career-high seven kills. Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) came off the bench and contributed five kills and three digs for the home squad.
The Waves hit an astounding .680 in the final stanza as they set a season-high for a three-set match with 48 kills, 44 assists, 38 digs, and eight blocks.
Pepperdine hosts Rutgers-Newark this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse.
