Waves Sweep Hope International in Non-Conference Tilt

MALIBU, Calif. – With a well-balanced effort, the #5 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team swept NAIA school Hope International in non-conference action on Friday evening inside Firestone Fieldhouse. Ten different players scored points for the Waves as the team improves to 10-6 on the season.
Pepperdine overpowered the Royals with 46 kills while hitting a season-high .542 (46 kills-7 errors-72 attempts). HIU countered with just 19 kills earned at a .123 (19-12-57) clip.
Not only was Pepperdine’s attack percentage a season-best, it ranks as the highest success rate achieved by any MPSF team in 2013 and sits at fourth in the Waves’ program records.
The Waves also held a 9.5-3.0 edge in blocks, as well as a 7-2 advantage in service aces. Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS), who entered this week ranked in the top-10 in the MPSF for service aces/set, cashed in a career-best four tonight. The sophomore setter additionally dished 43 assists in the victory.
With an ace and match-bests in both kills (10) and blocks (5), Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) led all players with 13.5 points.
Outside hitters Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) delivered near-identical performances to come in with 11.0 points apiece. Both student-athletes were credited with nine kills, two blocks and one ace.
Leonardo Granato (Reseda, Calif./Grover Cleveland HS/Pierce College), Beau Vandeweghe (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), J.J. Mosolf (Saugus, Calif./Hart HS/Hawaii) and Kyle Suppes (Union City, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) all provided a boost for Pepperdine coming off the bench. Granato pegged down five kills, including the set clinchers in both sets one and two, while Vandeweghe, Mosolf and Suppes were all a perfect 1-for-1 on the attack.
Hope International did win the battle of errors at the service line, committing just eight miscues compared to the Waves’ 19. Dominique Blonski chalked seven kills, an ace and two blocks to lead the Royals.
Although HIU scored the first point of the night, it was the only time Pepperdine trailed the entire evening.
Ryan Plueger (Los Angles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) picked up a match-high five digs from the libero spot. Middle blockers Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) and Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) contributed with seven and three kills, respectively.
The Waves host #2 UC Irvine on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. Free Pepperdine hats will be distributed to the first 200 students.
