PALO ALTO, Calif. – Despite 15 kills from both Josh Taylor and Maurice Torres, the #5 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team dropped a five set decision to #4 Stanford on Saturday night inside Maples Pavilion. The Waves successfully fought of two match points, but the Cardinal prevailed in the end with a 15-13 triumph in the fifth.

The 2-hour and 15-minute affair was decided by set scores of 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13. Stanford moves to 11-6 (8-6 MPSF) on the season with the win, while Pepperdine drops to 9-6 overall and in conference play.

The Cardinal registered a .349 (64 kills-20 errors-126 attempts) hitting percentage on the night. The Waves countered with a .277 (60-24-130) clip.

In addition to his 15 kills, Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) picked up eight digs. Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) matched Taylor’s 15 kills and added nine digs, two aces and four blocks.

Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) was efficient on the attack, disposing for 12 kills on 22 attempts for a final hitting percentage of .500 (12-1-22). The redshirt sophomore also paced the defense with six blocks.

Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS), who entered the week with an MPSF-best 11.02 assists/set, dished 52 tonight to bring his season average to 11.14. The sophomore tallied 54 assists in a four-set triumph vs. Pacific last night.

Stanford was led by Brian Cook’s 24 kills while hitting .476 (24-4-42), followed by Steven Irvin with 17 put aways.

After four sets and still no winner determined, the Waves and the Cardinal went to fifth and deciding frame. Although Stanford took a 10-8 lead, Pepperdine knotted the score at 11 thanks in part to a pair of Torres kills.

The Cardinal strung together a 3-0 run to take triple-match point, but one-by-one, the Waves were able to climb out of the hole. Torres put away a kill, followed by Beau Vandeweghe (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS). The comeback would stop short however, as a service error would put point No. 15 on the board for the home team.

Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) finished the evening with nine kills and eight digs, followed by Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill//Stevenson HS) with seven kills and two blocks. Junior libero Ryan Plueger (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) collected seven digs.

The Waves host their only nonconference match next week Friday, March 8, when they welcome Hope International to Firestone Fieldhouse. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. and action can be watched live and for free via WaveCasts.
