MALIBU, Calif. – Maurice Torres registered his first double-double of the season and the #5 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team defeated #11 California Baptist 3-1 on Wednesday night inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves are now 6-4 on the season, including a perfect 4-0 at home.

Set scores for the contest were 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23.

Although Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) has come close to achieving the kills-digs double-double twice prior to tonight, the senior finally broke through with a season-high 11 digs to go along with his 19 kills. While it was his first double-double of the season, it was the ninth of his storied career at Pepperdine.

Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) followed Torres with 11 kills while hitting .400 (11 kills-3 errors-20 attempts).

Although the Lancers hit a respectable .325 (56-19-114) clip, the Waves trumped that, hitting .404 (50-12-94). Pepperdine also got a boost from its defense and out-blocked CBU (6-6, 3-4 MPSF) 13.5-5.0. Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) accounted for seven of those roofs, followed by Torres with six and Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) with five.

Antonijevic added a tied-for-career high seven kills on eight errorless swings to the Waves’ offensive effort.

The Waves controlled the tempo from start to finish in set one, siding out at an 83-percent rate.  Pepperdine led by as much as eight points before a late CBU run closed the gap to five, 22-17. A kill courtesy of Torres, followed by another out of Kyle Gerrans (Los Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS) put the set away 25-18.

Although Pepperdine fell behind 12-14 in the second set, the Waves got themselves back on track and knotted the score up at 14. Tied at 16, the Waves scored two unanswered points followed by 5-0 run with Taylor at the service line to provide a bit more separation.  Up 24-20, Torres disposed of a kill to secure the set and give Pepperdine the 2-0 lead.

The Lancers found a bit of offensive rhythm in the third, and jumped out to a 12-7 advantage. Although the Waves came back within two, 19-17, CBU held on for the 25-20 triumph.

The momentum appeared to have shifted in the visiting team’s favor, and Cal Baptist snagged a five-point lead, 13-8, to open the fourth stanza. Pepperdine began to climb out of the hole after back-to-back blocks brought the home team within two, 11-13. Still trailing 12-15, a CBU service error gave the Waves the sideout and put the ball in the hands of Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy). Rhein, who came off the bench in the fourth set, dispatched two-consecutive aces to tie the frame at 15-all.

The score would read even five more times, until another cycle of back-to-back blocks gave Pepperdine a 22-20 edge. From there the Waves (6-4, 6-4 MPSF) were able to sideout their way to victory.

Rhein finished the night with two blocks and a dig to go along with his career-high two aces. Gerrans tallied seven total kills.

Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS), who leads the MPSF with 11.22 assists/set, dished 46 helpers in the contest.

On defense, Ryan Plueger (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) picked up six digs.

The Waves battle with #1 BYU on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. The Cougars are 8-2 this season, but have yet to play on the road. Free t-shirts will be given away to the first 200 students.
