Pepperdine Sweeps Long Beach State on the Road
Feb. 6, 2013
The Waves, who won by set scores of 25-22, 26-24, 25-21, improve to 5-3 on the season, while 49ers drop to 8-4.
Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran) was instrumental in the Pepperdine victory, leading the match with 16 kills and three service aces.
Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) set a new career high in hitting percentage, earning his 14 kills off a .650(14 kills-1 error-20 attempts) clip.
Although Long Beach State registered respectable .405 (41-9-79) rate on the attack, the Waves held a 24-18 advantage in digs to provide the offensive opportunities they needed to walk away with the win. Ryan Plueger (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) paced the floor with a season-best eight digs.
Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) distributed 42 assists in the contest, guiding the Waves to a .432 (50-12-88) hitting percentage.
The 49ers were led by Taylor Crabb with 13 kills.
The two opposing teams went back and forth in the opening frame until Torres launched a high velocity serve across the net. The 49ers’ pass went over the net and Kyle Gerrans (Los Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS) promptly returned it to the floor for the kill. On the very next point, Torres was credited with an ace to give Pepperdine a 9-7 advantage. The Waves, hitting a blistering .593 (18-2-27) on offense, never trailed the remainder of the set and went on to win 25-22. Torres was unstoppable at the net, disposing of eight kills.
Although Long Beach State sprinted out to an 11-8 lead in set two, Pepperdine continued to play aggressively. The Waves strung together a 3-0 run capped by a Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) ace to knot the score at 11. Pepperdine scored three consecutive points once again to take a 17-14 lead, but the 49ers fought back to tie things back up at 22. After a series of sideouts, Taylor knocked down a kill followed by Torres to clinch the set 26-24.
The Waves got off to an amazing start in the third frame. After a Long Beach State service error, Torres dished an ace followed by back-to-back Pepperdine blocks. Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) was assisted on the first by Gerrans on one side of the net, and then teamed up with West to throw the roof on the opposite end. Kalmbach got in on the offensive action with a kill, followed by yet another Torres ace to put Pepperdine up 6-0.
Despite the setback, the 49ers fired back and with an Edgar Palos service ace, tied the score at 9-all. A sideout game ensued until a 4-0 49er run tipped the scales in the home team’s favor, 16-13. It was the Waves’ turn this time to come back from behind, which they successfully did at the 18-18 mark. Momentum was on Pepperdine’s side the rest of the way and with five-consecutive Torres’ kills, the Waves won 25-21.
Pepperdine continues the week at #10 Cal State Northridge on Friday, Feb. 8. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
