Torres' 20 Kills Lift #11 Waves Over #12 UC San Diego
Feb. 4, 2011
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Led by 20 kills from Maurice Torres, the #11 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team overpowered #12 UC San Diego, 3-1, inside the RIMAC Arena on Friday evening. The victory was the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win for the Waves, who now improve to 3-5 overall. The Tritons fall to 5-7 this season, and 2-4 in the league. Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) starred for Pepperdine, scoring a match-high 24.0 points behind 20 kills, five blocks and a service ace. The sophomore has tallied 10 or more kills in every match this season, and has reached the 20 kills plateau on four occasions. As a team, the Waves hit a .361 attack percentage while holding the Tritons to a .280 clip. Pepperdine’s 11.5 blocks helped contribute to UC San Diego’s low success rate at the net. Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS) recorded six rejections, while Sean Pedersen (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mount Carmel HS) added a career-best three blocks in his first start of the season. Pepperdine came out hot in the first set, hitting a sizzling .600 hitting percentage. After the Waves built an 18-13 lead, UCSD put together a 5-0 run to tie the score. Pepperdine put a halt to the momentum shift with sound hitting from Torres, Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) and Pollock and put the set away 25-22 following a block courtesy of Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and Pedersen. Pepperdine did not fair as well in the second frame, as the home squad cruised to a 25-18 victory to tie the match at one set apiece. The Tritons continued to hold the lead in the third set, forcing the Waves to spend both of their timeouts early on. Down by three, Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS), Riecks and Pollock combined for four put aways to bring Pepperdine within one and prompt UCSD to call a break of its own. The Waves took their first lead of the set, 18-17, after a Ross service ace and never trailed the remainder of the frame. Ross set up game point with his fifth kill of the match, and a Triton miscue at the net put the 25th point on the board for Pepperdine. After the 25-23 win in the third, the Waves controlled the fourth set and out killed UC San Diego 15-8. Pedersen hit a perfect three kills on three attempts, while Torres chipped in four on seven swings en route to the 25-22 victory. Riecks finished the evening with 11 put downs, while Crider dished out 47 assists. Phil Bannan managed the UCSD offense with 30 assists. His fifth of the match officially made the senior the Triton’s all-time assists leader. The Waves return to Firestone Fieldhouse on Fri., Feb 11 when they welcome local rival USC for a 7 p.m. match. Tickets for the contest are $8 for adults and $5 for students, children and seniors and can be purchased at the door.
