MALIBU, Calif. – After falling behind 2-1 to the University of Alberta, the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team fought its way back to win 3-2 on Friday night inside Firestone Fieldhouse. Josh Taylor paced the Waves with 18 kills, while Kyle Gerrans had a well-rounded night with 11 kills, six blocks and nine digs.

Although Pepperdine claimed the opening edge in set one, the Golden Bears bounced back to take the 2-1 advantage before the Waves ultimately prevailed in the final two frames. Set scores were 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-11.

Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) proved once again to be Pepperdine’s go-to offensive weapon. The junior outside hitter put down 18 kills while hitting .263 (18 kills-8 errors-38 attempts), and also added a match-best three aces.

Through three exhibitions matches, Taylor is averaging 4.75 kills per set earned at a .430 (57-14-100) clip.

Gerrans (Lo Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS), hot off his career-first double-double on Tuesday versus British Columbia, was once again an all-around contributor. In addition to his 11 kills, Gerrans’ dig total of nine and blocks total of six were the most the senior has ever posted in a single match.

Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) led all players with seven blocks and the Waves out-blocked their opponents 13.0-11.0 overall.

Soren Dion-Kindem (Agoura, Calif./Agoura HS), averaging 10.92 assists per set in exhibition play, handed out 44 tonight while helping the defense with nine digs.

Alberta ended the night with a slightly higher attack percentage at .241 (56-24-133) compared to .240 (56-23-125), but the Waves won the battle at the service line. The Golden Bears committed 20 service errors while delivering just three aces. Pepperdine, although still high with 17 errors, dished six aces.

In addition to Taylor’s three aces, Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) landed a pair of aces and Gerrans added one.

After four sets played and still no winner, the match was sent to a deciding fifth frame. The Golden Bears emerged with an 8-5 lead, but a swarm of untimely attack errors helped the Waves knot the score up at 10-all.

Tied at 11-11, Gerrans put down back-to-back kills. After another Alberta miscue on the attack, its fifth of the stanza, Gerrans and Antonijevic threw the roof on to clinch the match 15-11.

Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar HS/Ohio State) got the start at libero and finished the night with nine digs.

Pepperdine, now 2-1 in exhibition play versus Canadian teams, concludes the series with Alberta with the Asics CanAm Challenge on Sunday, Jan. 5. First serve is set for 5 p.m. inside Firestone Fieldhouse and can be watched online live and for free on WaveCasts.
