Men's Volleyball Wins Tourney Opener
KAMLOOPS, B.C., Canada - The Pepperdine men's volleyball team opened the 2010 McDonald's International Tournament with a 3-1 win (25-15, 25-20, 25-27, 25-18) over the University of BC-Okanagan on Saturday.
The Waves, ranked #4 in the AVCA preseason poll, are making their third straight appearance at the event. Their matches against Canadian opposition will be considered exhibitions as Pepperdine gets ready to begin the regular season in one week.
Pepperdine moves into the championship semifinals and will face either McMaster or Trinity Western on Sunday.
"We weren't smooth in this first match," Pepperdine Coach Marv Dunphy said. "We dug a lot of balls ... We are glad to be back in a situation where there are refs and some fans. Our season is just a week or so away. This is good preparation."
The Waves were led by senior middle blocker Rodnei Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/BYU), who hit .524 and had 15 kills in 21 opportunities. Junior outside hitter Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) had 14 kills and senior outside hitter Brent Schirripa (Los Angeles, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS) added 13 kills.
Junior setter Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) had 51 assists for the Waves, who had a .279-.155 team hitting edge. Senior libero Sean Grubbs (Newport Beach, Calif./Irvine Valley CC) posted 14 digs.
