Beidas Wins the ITA West-South Singles Title
"It really wasn't fun playing Omar in the finals," said Beidas. "He's my friend and my teammate and we've played together for nine years. We knew there could only be one winner today. I felt like I had a really good day and he didn't play as well as he has been playing."
Pepperdine standout Andre Begemann won the ITA West-South Singles title in 2006 and 2007.
"I'm really happy with how the team played in this tournament," said head coach Adam Steinberg. "Today was difficult for both Bassam and Omar, but for both of them to make it to the singles finals in a 128 player draw and to also make it to the doubles finals is really amazing."
Beidas earned an automatic qualifier to the ITA National Indoor Championships in
Monday: No. 5 seed Omar Altmann and No. 1 seed Bassam Beidas handily defeated their opponents in the singles semifinals Monday morning to advance to the finals of the ITA West-South Tournament on Tuesday.
"It's a bit weird to be playing Bassam in the finals," said Altmann. "I'm happy it's all- Pepperdine. That was our goal from the beginning."
Altmann defeated D. LaJolla (Hawaii) in the singles semifinals, 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, Beidas was finishing up with a victory over M. Kecki (USC), 6-2, 6-2, to make it an all Pepperdine final on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
In doubles action, Altmann and Beidas fell to Steven Johnson and Robert Farah (USC) in the finals, 8-5, on Monday afternoon.
Sunday:The No. 2 seed doubles team of Bassam Beidas and Omar Altmann will face the No. 1 seed team of Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of USC Monday after both teams advanced from the semifinals on Sunday, at ITA West-South Tournament.
Beidas/Altmann defeated Jackson/Wolmerans of USD, 9-7, on Sunday morning in the semifinals.
Mahmoud Kamel defeated P. Metham of Arizona, 6-1,6-2, then lost to teammate Beidas in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-2. Beidas won an earlier match in the round of 16 against J. Goldman of Arizona, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Altmann defeated S. Heinman of Hawaii, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, to advance to the afternoon quarterfinals. No. 5 Altmann prevailed over Steve Johnson of USC, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals.
Beidas faces Matt Kecki of USC at 10 a.m. while Altmann meets Dennis Lajolla of Hawaii also at 10 a.m. in the singles semifinals. The doubles finals will follow after 1 p.m.
