Pepperdine to Play BYU, Vanderbilt and Cal Poly at 2012 ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend
June 8, 2011
MALIBU, Calif. - The 2012 ITA Division I Men’s Kick-Off Weekend Draft was held earlier today, and the Pepperdine men’s tennis team will be playing host to BYU, Vanderbilt and Cal Poly to open the dual season next January.
The top-seeded Waves will face No. 4 seed Cal Poly in the first round on Jan. 27. If they are victorious, they’ll face the winner of the BYU-Vanderbilt matchup on Jan. 28.
Pepperdine was chosen as a host site by virtue of ending this season ranked in the top-15 of the Campbell/ITA Collegiate rankings.
The 15 teams to win both matches at their respective Kick-Off Weekend sites will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by the Boar’s Head Sports Club at the University of Virginia.
While the Waves boast the top seed, they face a challenging field. BYU, Vanderbilt and Cal Poly all finished the 2011 campaign ranked in the top-45, and earned bids to the NCAA Championships.
This past season Pepperdine fell just short of making it to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, defeating Virginia Tech before losing to Duke 4-3 at the 2011 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Waves later avenged the loss with a 4-3 triumph over the Blue Devils at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Pepperdine finished this season with an 18-5 record and reached as high as #7 in the rankings. They return nine letterwinners to the 2011-12 squad including All-American Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) and All-WCC Singles first team selections Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) and Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico).
