Pepperdine Tennis Recognized in April's WCC Player of the Month Awards
May 7, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – It was nearly a clean sweep for Pepperdine tennis in the April edition of the West Coast Conference Player of the Month awards. The Waves claimed three of the possible four awards. For the women’s team, Khunpak Issara was honored as the WCC Singles Player of the Month and additionally took home the doubles award as well with partner Megan Moore. On the men’s side, Alex Sarkissian and Finn Tearney were dubbed the doubles team of the month.
Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) went a perfect 7-0 during the month of April, bringing her win streak to 17 matches in a row. The senior has not lost since mid-February and is a team-best 20-2 in singles during the 2013 dual season. Her current winning percentage of .909 would tie her for fourth in the Waves’ program records, while just one more singles win would tie her for 10th in the single-season overall wins category.
Even more impressive is that Issara has lost just one set since starting her win streak on February 17.
Issara allowed just 1.57 games/set in her seven wins in April.
Issara and Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) paired up for the first time in April after head coach Gualberto Escudero made some changes to his lineup. The pair went 5-0 from the No. 1 spot in the lineup last month to lead Pepperdine to a 7-1 overall record. The Waves won a share of the WCC regular-season title and won the tournament championship.
Issara and Moore started and ended the month with wins versus Jenny Jullien and Danielle Flores of Saint Mary’s. The Wave duo first beat the Gaels 9-7 in the regular season, before chalking an 8-4 decision during the WCC Tournament finals. They also tallied a win versus a ranked opponent with an 8-5 triumph versus Laura Claus and Shani Blecher, ranked #68 at the time, of San Diego.
This is Issara’s first singles player of the month award this season and second of her career. In doubles, Issara brings her award total to nine. Moore is making her first appearance on the conference’s monthly award list.
The women’s team went 7-1 during the month of April. Their only loss came to Saint Mary’s, which they avenged during the finals of the WCC Tournament. Pepperdine upset the top-seeded Gaels in the finals 4-0 to take home its 23rd conference tournament title. The team opens the NCAA Tournament this Friday, May 10 when they face Rice in Palo Alto, Calif.
Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Verdugo Academy/Glendale CC) and Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) went a team-best 7-0 during the month of April, helping the Waves to both the West Coast Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
The duo opened the month with an 8-5 win against Portland’s Ratan Gill and Alex Ferrero from the No. 1 slot in the lineup. The rest of April, Sarkissian and Tearney took up residence at the No. 2 spot. The tandem convincingly topped Tuomas Manner and Samuel Bloore of Saint Mary’s 8-0. During the finals of the WCC Tournament, Sarkissian and Tearney got the day started out strong, putting away an 8-1 decision versus Andrey Goryachkov and Spencer Smith. Just a week prior, Sarkissian and Tearney rallied back from a 1-5 deficit versus Goryachkov and Smith to win 8-5.
Pepperdine went 8-1 during the month of April with its sole loss coming against #3 UCLA, 4-3.
The men’s team hosts the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend, May 10-11 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves open action against UC Santa Barbara on Friday. A win would pit the team against either Stanford or LSU.
