Fanselow Repeats as WCC Tennis Player of the Year
May 1, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - Four members of the #10 Pepperdine men's tennis team were honored in the All-West Coast Conference Awards, the league announced today. Sebastian Fanselow was labeled WCC Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season, while Finn Tearney, Alex Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara also made the list. In addition, head coach Adam Steinberg was voted the WCC Coach of the Year by his peers for the seventh time.
Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep), ranked #8 in the ITA singles rankings, is 19-6 in 2013 with an 11-5 mark versus ranked opponents.
The senior, who is poised to earn ITA All-American status in singles for the third time this season, was also placed on the All-WCC first team in both singles and doubles, along with partner Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State). Fanselow is now a four-time first team selection in singles and three-time honoree in doubles.
His career singles win tally of 75 (dual season only) ranks ninth in the program's storied history.
Pepperdine now boasts 10 different student-athletes who have won WCC Player of the Year recognition a combined 15 times.
Fanselow and Alcantara didn't team up until late in the season, but have been strong from the No. 1 spot in the lineup and have three victories to show for it.
Also making an appearance on the All-WCC singles first team was Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College). The senior is now a three-time first teamer after picking up honorable mention status as a freshman.
In 2013, Tearney has played between the No. 1 and No. 3 spots in the lineup for a combined record or 19-5. He has 70 career singles wins to his credit which ranks tied for 11th in the program annuls.
Rounding out the Waves' awards in singles was Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), who made an appearance on the second team roster. Sarkissian is in his first season competing for Pepperdine after transferring from nearby Glendale Community College. He boasts the best dual-season singles record on the team at 20-4.
Together, Tearney and Sarkissian were voted to the All-WCC doubles second team. The duo is a perfect 8-0 and plays mostly from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The pair pieced together a remarkable comeback in the regular-season finale versus BYU, coming back from a 1-5 deficit to win 8-5.
The Waves earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after winning its 40th WCC Tournament title last weekend. Pepperdine hosts first and second round action next weekend, May 10-11, and welcomes UC Santa Barbara, Stanford and LSU to the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Pepperdine faces the Gauchos on Friday at 1 p.m., while the Tigers and Cardinal square off before that at 10 a.m. Winners play each other on Saturday at 1 p.m. The victor advances to the round of 16 at Khan Tennis Complex at the University of Illinois on May 16-27.
