MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men’s tennis team, currently listed at #8 in the ITA rankings, wraps up the regular season this Friday, April 19 vs. #39 BYU. Senior Day will be celebrated for Sebastian Fanselow, Mousheg Hovhannisyan and Finn Tearney, and free pizza will be served. Match time is set for 3 p.m.

LOOKING BACK - The Waves played four matches in six days beginning last week Wednesday at Stanford ... Pepperdine clinched the win vs. the Cardinal at 4-2 before Stanford captured the final point of the afternoon ... Pepperdine hosted Saint Mary’s at the Riviera Country Club on Friday and emerged with a 7-0 shutout ... The next day the Waves downed San Diego, 5-2, at home ... The Waves nearly pulled off the upset vs. #2 UCLA on Monday but fell just short ... Pepperdine won the doubles point via Sebastian Fanselow and Francis Alcantara’s 9-8 (5) win at No. 1 doubles ... After the Bruins fought back in singles and took a 3-1 lead, Alex Sarkissian (7-5, 6-4) and Fanselow (4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3)) won to knot the score at 3-3 ... David Sofaer lost a heart breaking three-set decision in the tiebreaker to Clay Thompson and UCLA escaped Malibu with the ‘W’ ... The Waves were playing without Finn Tearney, who normally holds down the No. 2 spot in the singles lineup and either plays No. 1 or No. 2 in doubles.
SENIOR DAY - The Waves celebrate the storied careers of three of the finest players to ever set foot in Malibu ... Sebastian Fanselow is a two-time singles All-American, 2012 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and three-time All-WCC first team selection ... Finn Tearney earned All-WCC first team honors in both singles and doubles in 2012 and earned first-team distinction in singles in 2011 ... He has been voted WCC Doubles Player of the Month six times with three different partners ... Mousheg Hovhannisyan was an All-WCC honorable mention singles performer as a freshman .... Last year as a junior, he reached as high as #49 in the singles rankings ... Fanselow, Tearney and Hovhannisyan led the Waves to two West Coast Conference Championships over the last three years ... Last season, the trio was an integral part in Pepperdine’s run to the semifinals at the NCAA Championship.
BYU - The Cougars are 19-4 this season, including a perfect 6-0 in West Coast Conference play ... BYU is 8-2 vs. ranked opponents but has not topped a team ranked higher than #37 in 2013 ... Patrick Kawka ranks in at #38 in singles and #84, along with Francis Sargeant, in doubles.
LOOKING AHEAD - Next up is the West Coast Conference Championship on April 24-27 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego ... The No. 3 seed in the tournament, based on the regular season standings, receives a first-round bye, while the top two seeds receive first and second-round byes ... Pepperdine, guaranteed the No. 1 or No. 2 seed regardless of Friday’s outcome, will receive a bye into the semifinals and opens the tournament on April 26 ... The title match, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on the line, is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
RANKINGS - The Waves are currently ranked #8 in the team rankings, and have reached as high as #5 ... Sebastian Fanselow is currently ranked #9 in singles after reaching as high as #4 ... Francis Alcantara broke into the rankings on Feb. 26, reached as high as #53 and currently sits at #100 ... Alex Sarkissian entered the rankings on Feb. 12, has reach as high as #73 and has now re-entered at #92 ... Finn Tearney made his first rankings appearance of 2013 at #105, reached as high as #77 and currently sits at #103 ... Tearney and Alcantara also broke into the doubles rankings on Feb. 26 at #27 and currently rank #35 ... THE LINEUP - The doubles lineup has seen several changes over that past few weeks ... Five different pairs have seen action at No. 1, most recently Sebastian Fanselow and Francis Alcantara ... Finn Tearney and Alex Sarkissian have taken up residence in the No. 2 spot in the lineup ... David Sofaer and Mousheg Hovhannisyan have held down the No. 3 spot in the doubles lineup for the majority of the season ... In singles Fanselow has held down the top spot, while Tearney, Sarkissian and Alcantara, rotate between the 2-4 spots ... Hovhannisyan and Sofaer typically play at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively ... Kento Tanaka-Tamaki and Damian Gryzelko have also made their way into the doubles and singles rotation.

WCC PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Sebastian Fanselow was the West Coast Conference singles player of the month for November, after his run at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship, and again in February ... Mousheg Hovhannisyan and David Sofaer were awarded January Doubles Team of the Month honors after opening the season with back-to-back victories ... Finn Tearney and Francis Alcantara were announced as February’s WCC Doubles Team of the Month after being honored as All-Tournament performers at the ITA National Indoor Team Championship.
Adam Steinberg - Now in his 11th season as head coach of the Waves, Adam Steinberg boasts career record of 285-151 including a 155-72 mark at Pepperdine. Since setting foot on the Malibu campus in 2003, Steinberg has captured six WCC conference championships, six appearances in the NCAA Tournament, and an NCAA Championship crown in 2006. He has tutored 16 Waves to All-American status, and has been named WCC Coach of the Year six times. Prior to coming to Pepperdine, Steinberg served as the head coach at Alabama and St. John’s for five seasons apiece.
