Alcantara, Sarkissian Enter Road Trip as WCC Doubles Team of the Week

MALIBU, Calif. - The #47 Pepperdine men's tennis team ends the regular season with three road duals, starting with stops at West Coast Conference schools Pacific and Saint Mary's this week. Additionally, seniors Francis Alcantara and Alex Sarkissian earned their league-best fifth WCC Doubles Team of the Week award today.

WCC DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK - Senior sensations Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) and Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) capped off their final two matches at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center with two doubles wins, and in doing so, helped the Waves to wins over Gonzaga and Portland. On Friday vs. the Bulldogs, Sarkissian and Alcantara held off an upset bid by Jack Schoebel and Muzeen Ismath to emerge with the 8-6 victory and secure the doubles point for Pepperdine. The Waves celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, honoring Sarkissian, Alcantara and David Sofaer. Sarkissian and Alcantara made the most of their final match together at home, downing Alex Ferrero and Ratan Gill 8-3 to clinch the doubles point for the second day in a row. Both Sarkissian and Alcantara went on to win in singles in both matches last week. The duo went an impressive 11-2 at home this season in doubles, and enter this week with a 16-4 dual season record. After ranking in at #10 last week by the ITA, Sarkissian and Alcantara moved up one spot to #9 this week.

LOOKING BACK - Pepperdine hosted its final two matches of the regular season at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center last week and emerged victorious on both accounts ... The Waves first shut out Gonzaga, 7-0, before earning a 6-1 victory over Portland on Senior Day .... David Sofaer, Alex Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara were recognized prior to the match.
LOOKING AHEAD - The Waves conclude the regular season next week Wednesday, April 16 at San Diego ... The Toreros and Pepperdine are both currently undefeated in conference play, and next week's match could potentially decide the regular season WCC Champion ... Pepperdine beat USD 4-1 in a nonconference meeting during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend back in January.
PACIFIC - The Tigers are 10-9 overall this season and 3-3 in the WCC ... Pacific has won two in a row with victories over Air Force and Saint Mary's ... Tiger ace Sam Verbeek is the reigning WCC Singles Player of the Week.
SAINT MARY'S - The Gaels are 7-8 overall in 2014 and 2-3 in league matches ... Saint Mary's WCC wins were over BYU and Gonzaga, both 4-3 decisions.
WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - The Waves have already collected their fair share of conference honors this season ... Alex Sarkissian was the first player in the league to repeat as WCC Singles Player of the Week (2/11, 3/13) ... Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara have been voted WCC Doubles Team of the Week five of the possible nine times (2/11, 2/25, 3/16, 3/26, 4/8) ... Alcantara picked up his first Singles Player of the Week nod on March 26.
RANKINGS - Senior Alex Sarkissian opened the 2014 dual season ranked a then career-high #33 in singles and has since moved up to #27 ... Fellow senior David Sofaer reached as high as #58 in the singles rankings ... Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara are ranked #9 in doubles ... As a team, Pepperdine is ranked #47.
Adam Steinberg - Now in his 12th season as head coach of the Waves, Adam Steinberg boasts career record of 315-166 including a 185-87 mark at Pepperdine. Since setting foot on the Malibu campus in 2003, Steinberg has captured seven WCC conference championships, seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, and an NCAA Championship crown in 2006. He has tutored 16 Waves to All-American status, and has been named WCC Coach of the Year seven times. Prior to coming to Pepperdine, Steinberg served as the head coach at Alabama and St. John's for five seasons apiece.
