Alcantara, Sarkissian Sweep Weekly West Coast Conference Awards
March 26, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – For the second time this season, Francis Alcantara and Alex Sarkissian, both seniors on the Pepperdine men’s tennis team, swept the West Coast Conference Player of the Week awards. Alcantara was dubbed the Singles Player of the Week, and partnered with Sarkissian to take home Doubles Team of the Week honors.
The Waves hosted a three-match home stand that featured two teams in the top-20 – including top-ranked Oklahoma – last week. Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) was the only Pepperdine player to win a set in singles vs. the Sooners, taking the first frame vs. #5 Guillermo Alcorta 6-4. Alcantara was on serve, 3-4 vs. Alcorta in the second when action was suspended.
The senior followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over San Francisco’s James Tallman. On Sunday, the #46 Waves nearly upset #17 Cal but ultimately fell 4-3. Down 1-3 as a team, Alcantara kept Pepperdine alive by winning his third set vs. #81 Campbell Johnson, 6-2. For the unranked Alcantara, it was his first win over a ranked opponent this season. He is 10-6 in dual action in 2014 and 17-9 overall.
This is Alcantara’s first WCC Singles Player of the Week award, and third overall for the Waves this season. Sarkissian has been picked the singles winner twice.
Alcantara and Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), by far the top ranked team in the league at #10, went 2-1 last week, earning wins over doubles pairs from #1 Oklahoma and San Francisco.
The Waves’ top duo, ranked #15 at the time, first defeated #37 Dane Webb and Andrew Harris 8-5 to get the Waves rolling vs. the Sooners. David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent’s HS) would clinch the doubles point at No. 3, marking just the fourth time top-ranked Oklahoma has lost the doubles point this season.
Alcantara and Sarkissian, more commonly known as Niño and Sarge on the courts, then downed USF’s Germain Bahri and Tallman 8-4. Although the duo lost in doubles vs. Cal on Sunday, both rebounded with wins in singles to tally points for Pepperdine. Alcantara and Sarkissian are 16-5 overall this season, including 4-2 vs. ranked opponents.
This is the conference-high fourth time in 2014 the Waves’ senior pair has been dubbed WCC Doubles Team of the Week.
Pepperdine resumes action this week at BYU on Saturday.
