Waves Host Tennis Party Friday
March 24, 2005
Malibu, Calif. - When No. 13 Pepperdine hosts the second-ranked Illinois men's tennis team on Friday head coach Adam Steinberg hopes to have the seventh man in the Waves' corner. The Waves will put their perfect 7-0 home record on the line against the Illini at 1:00 p.m.
In addition to the quality tennis on the courts, the team invites fans to come enjoy a party atmosphere at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Free food, music and raffle prizes will all be available at this premiere match up.
Steinberg urges all Pepperdine fans, tennis enthusiasts or not, to come check out one of campus's top-ranked teams. The Waves are 13th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and boast two ranked singles players and two ranked doubles teams.
Pedro Rico is ranked 16th in the country, while Scott Doerner is rated 51st in Tuesday's poll. Together the two juniors are currently tagged as the 16th-best pair in the country. Newcomers Jonas Berg and Ivor Lovrak claim the 40th spot in the rankings this week with their 11-1 record.
The high-energy atmosphere of Pepperdine tennis will be at a fever pitch at the biggest home match on the Waves' 2005 schedule. Illinois holds a 12-1 record, with its lone blemish coming at the hands of top-ranked Baylor. Illinois fell to the Bears by a 4-3 margin, as did the Waves in February. The Fighting Illini are also well represented in the rankings with three top-30 players. No. 6 Ryler Deheart, No. 24 Kevin Anderson and No. 27 G.D. Jones set up intriguing matches with Doerner, Rico and Berg atop the lineup. No. 9 Deheart/Jones will also face off against Doerner/Rico in doubles.
"We are playing great tennis right now and this is a huge match for us on Friday," says Steinberg. "We'd love to see everyone come out and have a good time and support the Waves."
First serve is at 1:00 p.m.
