Pepperdine Upsets No. 11 Cal, 4-3, On Saturday

BERKLEY, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's tennis team produced its biggest win of the season to date as it upset No. 11 California at the Hellman Courts in Berkeley Saturday afternoon.
In a very intense early season match-up, two West Coast schools battled it out with, the Pepperdine Waves coming out on top in the end, 4-3. With the win, Pepperdine improves to 6-2 in the season. The Golden Bears dropped to 1-3 on the year.
After winning the No. 2 and 3 doubles match, the Waves waltzed to singles play ahead 1-0. The duo made up of Scott Doerner and Alexandre Herrera remained perfect this season by upending Tyler Browne and Daniel Sebescen, 8-5. The Waves' team of Alexis Rafidison and Kevin Borzenski dropped John Pettit and Wayne Wong, 8-5.
In a match that came down to the wire, Pepperdine took control of two of the final three matches.
In those final three matches Wong defeated Pepperdine's No. 31 Calle Hansen 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. But Cal's Balazs Veress and Browne were not as lucky, falling in two hard-fought matches to the Wave's Pedro Rico, playing at the No. 1 position (6-7, 6-2, 6-4) and Rafidison, playing No. 5 singles(6-7, 6-4, 6-4), respectively. The Waves first singles point was earned by Herrera after he easily beat Patrick Briaud, 6-2, 6-4.
The Waves will return to the courts on Tuesday versus San Diego at 1 p.m.
