Sarkissian, Alcantara Sweep WCC Player of the Week Honors

MALIBU, Calif.Alex Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara swept the season’s first installment of the West Coast Conference Player of the Week awards, as announced by the league office today. Sarkissian was honored for his achievements on the singles court, and was additionally dubbed the Doubles Team of the Week with partner Alcantara.

Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), a 2013 ITA All-American, started off his senior year in a big way, going undefeated in both singles and doubles with five duals in the books. Even more impressive, Sarkissian plays at No. 1 in both singles and doubles, going against opposing team’s top players day in and day out.

Sarkissian has lifted the Waves to a 4-1 record to open the year, with wins over #36 Washington, #41 San Diego, #30 Tulsa and Cal Poly. After battling with the Huskies’ ace Max Manthou to a narrow three-set victory, Sarkissian won his next four matches in straight sets. In a nonconference matchup vs. the Toreros, Sarkissian quickly defeated Clarke Spinosa, currently the WCC’s top-ranked singles player at #27, 6-1, 6-1.

Sarkissian opened the season with a career-high singles ranking of #33.

Sarkissian’s doubles record mirrors his singles tally at 5-0. He pairs with fellow senior Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) and together the duo has been a reliable tandem from the top spot in the lineup.

On four occasions this season, the fate of the doubles point has rested on the result of the No. 1 doubles match. On all four occasions Sarkissian and Alcantara have walked away with the victory to clinch the point for the Waves.


 

 

Pepperdine’s next match is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22. The Waves travel to crosstown rival UCLA for a 2 p.m. dual at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Pepperdine returns to the home courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Wednesday, Feb. 26 to host a doubleheader featuring Nevada (10 a.m.) and UC Irvine (3 p.m.).
