Steinberg Reaches Century Mark at Pepperdine as Waves Go 2-0 on Saturday

MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's tennis team gave head coach Adam Steinberg his 99th and 100th Pepperdine victories after defeating No. 58 Saint Mary's, 6-1, and Santa Clara, 7-0, in a West Coast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.

The Waves (4-1) were first up against No. 58 Saint Mary's, which earned its first-ever national ranking this week. The Waves had no problem in doubles sweeping all three matches. Richard Johnson and Omar Altmann put away Joel Kusnierz and Andre Sion 8-5 at court one, while Andre Begemann and Mahmoud Kamel defeated Yury Platonov and Achim Christner, 8-5. At No. 3, freshmen teammates Bassam Beidas and James Lemke defeated Adam Fauvre and Alp Ozanar 8-4.

No. 33 Begemann, defeated Kusnierz, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while all three Wave freshmen came up with straight-set victories. Altmann fell in the first set, 6-3 to Fauvre, but rebounded with 6-3, 6-2 wins in the second and third sets.

Saint Mary's (2-2) only point came at No. 2 singles where Sion defeated Johnson 6-2, 6-4.

In the second match of the day, the Waves shutout Santa Clara as they swept both singles and doubles. Beidas and Lemke dominated at No. 3 doubles, defeating Brian Brogan and Robert Gallman 8-1. Altmann and Johnson and Kamel and Begemann both picked up 8-5 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Altmann finished first with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tommy Hicks, while Begemann followed with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Jan Macek. Johnson recovered at No. 2 singles as he handed Brogan a 7-5, 6-2 defeat to give the Waves their second win of the day.

After falling 6-3 in the first set, Lemke battled back to win 6-1 in the second and third sets over Jay Wong. Both Beidas and Kamel won in three sets to give the Waves the sweep.

Pepperdine is back in action on Wednesday Feb. 7 when it travels north to face No. 45 Fresno State in a 5 p.m. match.
