Sebastian Fanselow to Play for USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Singles Championship Title

IRVINE, Calif. - Sebastian Fanselow of the Pepperdine men's tennis team advanced to the championship singles match at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships today inside the Anteater Tennis Stadium. The winner of tomorrow's final will take part in the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 4-7 in the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Three Waves began the day with quarterfinal match ups. Fanselow (Essen, Germany) opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over USC rival Raymond Sarmiento. The Pepperdine sophomore currently ranks No. 50 in the Campbell/ITA preseason singles poll.
Also wining in the quarterfinals was Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico), who topped No. 65-ranked Jaak Poldma, also of USC), 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
Finn Tearney's (Wellington, New Zealand) run came to an end. The sophomore was riding a three-match win streak before stumbling against Chris Kearney of hosting UC Irvine, 6-4, 6-3.
Llompart and Fanselow, who were both competing in the bottom half of the singles bracket, inevitably met up in the semifinals creating the first Wave vs. Wave match of the season. Fanselow ended the day on top, and is slated to face top seeded Daniel Nguyen of USC tomorrow.
Llompart and Tearney opened the tournament with three wins in the doubles bracket, but bowed out today in the semifinals against a pair from UCLA.
Action at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships resumes tomorrow.
