Waves Get Started at USTA Clay Court Invitational

ORLANDO, Fla. – Just nicely finished with the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, the Pepperdine men’s tennis team is already back in action at the USTA Clay Court Invitational. Two Waves, including David Sofaer and Stefan Menichella, won today to advance in the singles draw.
The event, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, features a 64-person singles draw and 32-team doubles draw.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) posted a “W” in the wins column, his sixth of the young fall season, with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Jose Sangroniz of Central Florida. Sofaer, a 9-16 seed in the bracket, will take on Tom Fawcett in the round of 32 tomorrow.
Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) also won today, knocking out North Florida’s Jack Findel-Hawkins 6-4, 6-4.
Both Kento Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) and Alexander Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) suffered losses in the first round and will look to rebound tomorrow in consolation.
The USTA Clay Court Invitational continues through Sunday, when ESPN3 will broadcast the day’s matches.
