Alex Sarkissian to Battle in Regional Championship Finale

MALIBU, Calif. – Another day, anther hard-found win for Pepperdine’s Alex Sarkissian at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. The senior won in straight sets in this afternoon’s semifinal to reach the title match, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) faced Mackenzie McDonald, a freshman out of UCLA.
The Waves’ senior dominated the first set, winning by a score of 6-2 to take the early advantage.
Although Sarkissian fell behind a break early on in set two, he was able to bounce back and even the score. Tied at 5-all, he held serve and fought Mackenzie to deuce in the next game. After several match points, Sarkissian finally broke through to win 7-5 and advance to the championship.
Tomorrow the Pepperdine ace, seeded third in the tournament, will face No. 2 seed Yannick Hanfmann of USC. Both players have yet to drop a single set at the regional championship.
The all-Trojan doubles final will be contested at Marks Stadium at 3 p.m.
Consolation matches wrapped up today with McDonald’s teammate Seth Stolar winning the back draw.
Following tomorrow’s singles final, the Waves pick up the racquet this weekend at the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Championship in Orlando, Fla.
