Tearney Successful in Singles and Doubles on Day Two of USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship

IRVINE, Calif. - Top-seeded Finn Tearney of the Pepperdine men's tennis team is one of 16 singles players left standing at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship after a dominating victory today at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. In addition, Tearney and Mousheg Hovhannisyan are through to the round of 16 in doubles. Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College), who did not allow a single game in yesterday's shut-out victory, downed USC's Michael Grant 6-1, 6-1 today in the round of 32. He will face Grant's teammate, Eric Johnson, in the next round tomorrow. After splitting sets with Nicholas Bjerke, Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) was edged in the deciding frame 6-4. Tearney and Hovhannisyan teamed up in the doubles draw and logged a pair of wins today. They first knocked off Grant and Jonny Wang, 8-2, before eliminating Jacob Jung and Tyler Pham, 8-6. The Pepperdine tandem will face San Diego's Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy in the quarterfinals on Sunday. In the singles consolation draw, Damian Gryzelko (London, England/Saddlebrook Preparatory School) rebounded from yesterday's loss with a 6-3, 7-6 triumph over Ryan Cheung of UC Irvine.
