Oct. 20, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - After three days of action at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, Alex Sarkissian of the Pepperdine men's tennis team remains standing in the singles draw. The senior won in today's quarterfinal matchup to punch his ticket into the semifinals.
The day opened with doubles. Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) teamed up with Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) to beat Fredrik Ask and Kiren Thompson of Arizona 8-5.
David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) also competed in the round of 16, after knocking out Marco Comuzzo and Gannon Daynes of Cal Poly yesterday.
Sofaer and Menichella upset the No. 5-8 seeded Ryan Cheung and Jonathan Hammel of UC Irvine 8-2 to become the Waves' second doubles team to reach the quarterfinals.
After the doubles round of 16, Sarkissian battled in singles where he handily won in straight sets. He'll face Mackie McDonald of UCLA in tomorrow's semifinal.
Back to doubles, both Pepperdine pairs fell in narrow 8-6 decisions against teams out of USC.
The USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship continues tomorrow and champions will be crowned on Tuesday.
