Oct. 19, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Several members of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team are still in the hunt for the title at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. Alex Sarkissian advanced to the quarterfinals in singles, while two doubles teams will represent the Waves in the round of 16.
Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), along with doubles partner Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State), began their quest for the doubles championship on a perfect note, disposing of Adrian Legarreta and Ahmad Saleem 8-0.
Freshman-senior combo Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) were also victorious and defeated Marco Comuzzo and Gannon Daynes in the tiebreaker.
Two rounds of singles, including the rounds of 32 and 16 were contested today. Sarkissian first beat Nick Crystal of USC in straight sets before downing UCLA’s Gage Brymer 6-3, 7-6.
Soafer pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament to date, defeating #63 Jonny Wang. Wang, seeded seventh in the draw, edged Sofaer in the first set 7-6, but the Wave evened the score with a 7-5 win in the second. The third set went the distance, but Sofaer emerged with a 6-4 win to advance.
Later in the afternoon, Sofaer found himself evenly matched with Tobias Galskov of UC Santa Barbara. The Gaucho was a bit sharper, having won his first match of the day 6-3, 6-0, and edged Sofaer 7-6, 7-5.
Alcantara rebounded from his loss yesterday in singles with a victory in consolation play.
Two rounds of doubles, one round of singles and continued consolation play are on tomorrow’s slate. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. Full results and draws can be found on the Tournament Central.
